This is a painting of my Mom, Barbara Hurff Reimensnyder. She is 84 and has a frontal lobe form of dementia. I had been wanting to paint her for a while but was ambivalent for fear of failing. Finally I got my nerve up and gave it a shot. She was not able to stay still at all so I took a picture of her with my iPad and wedged that in next to the board I was painting on. I used her for color and value but referred to the iPad for the pose. I was very pleasantly surprised at how it came out. I feel like it pretty accurately portrays her current state of being. I think that the looseness of the spots of paint add to the mood. It is in someways a sad painting. Her children have all been very devoted to her. I think this will be one of my favorite paintings for some time. It will be a gift to my brother when she dies.
